Careers GuideSite of the month 03/04
REVIEW: This section of the extensive BBC Music website offers sound advice on various kinds of music careers. The information seems to maintain a sense of optimism about the importance of working with music, and the available opportunities, while still being realistic about the challenges and competition of pursuing a career in music. Video interviews with professionals from seven different music-related vocations give first-hand advice to parents and students. Reviewed November 2002, by David Pearson.

ClassicOL.ComSite of the month 07/04
Review: An excellent example of a specialist online community. This site for classical musicians provides links grouped into meaningful and convenient sections. Links cover music news, instruments, organizations, geographical locations, MP3 files, radio stations, a wide selection of specialist notice boards, and a high-quality chat room. Many of the sections allow users to deposit their own links and are therefore currently empty because the site is new. But due to its excellent design and state-of-the-art interface, the site looks set to grow and become a major resource. Reviewed April 2001, by David Pearson

GramophoneThe site for this major music magazine. Although glossy and commercial, the site, like the magazine, is packed with news, features and information about recordings and the classical music world. Particularly useful is the Gramofile archive, claiming to be the world’s largest archive of classical CDs and reviews. It states that a hundred critiques are added every month. This is an easily searchable database that generates quality reviews of recordings. A simple search box for the Grove Concise Dictionary is also a handy tool.

Philip TaggProclaiming itself as a "no frills" website, Philip Tagg's site is packed with fascinating resources. The academic content of the site is innovative, including full-text articles, detailed course materials, and an archive of student projects. The musical subject matter is wide ranging, particularly strong on areas of popular music, film, and semiotics. Further links lead to rare sites of political and miscellaneous interest. Anyone with anti-capitalist sentiments will also find a mine of useful, moving, and amusing links and images. Educators and researchers in most areas of music and the humanities are likely to gain something from this site.

Real UK MusicA well-presented music portal. The contents are listed by genre (popular, club, classical, folk, etc.) and resources (instruments, printed music, studios, tuition, etc.). Each section provides links, mainly to external sites. Although the site is clear and catalogued in an accessible way, it is not obvious how the resources have been collected and whether it is possible to submit material. But well worth a visit for teachers and performers seeking contacts.
