Classic Cat - the free classical music directoryClassic Cat is a directory linked to free recordings of classical music available on the Web. The site is searchable and browsable by composer and performer and each entry is well linked to other sites containing biographical information and shops where recordings and sheet music can be purchased. While the sites linked from Classic Cat often require brief registration before downloading music, this directory is nevertheless a useful place to visit for those in search of online recordings of music by western classical composers.

Classical Midi ArchivesREVIEW: Though of limited quality, MIDI files are useful for reference and are a convenient way to store music electronically with minimal memory. Predictably, the vast majority of pieces are by a very small number of canonic European composers, but many composers are catalogued and selected pieces are linked to high-quality scores that can be printed. Visitors can deposit their own MIDI files into the archive.

MagnatuneMagnatune provides an innovative alternative to the larger music download sites. The visitor to the site is clearly presented with a relatively small number of artists and genres to choose from (although the artists are not famous, Magnatune claims that quality is maintained by signing only a limited number). An album can be listened to for free, or purchased at a price chosen by the buyer. All purchases are split 50-50: half the money to Magnatune, half to the artist(s). This approach aims to give artists fairer exposure while bridging what is too often an enormous gap between the interests of the industry and the consumer.
