Biography
Miriam Murtin joined PALATINE in February 2004, fresh from having completed her MPhil in Eighteenth-Century English Opera at the University of Exeter. She started her academic career reading English Letters at the Free University of Amsterdam (all twenty-six of them) but soon, realising drama was ‘it’, turned her attention to matters more theatrical. After graduation, she came to Exeter to do an MA in Theatre Practice, writing and directing two children’s plays, which toured local primary schools and the Edinburgh Fringe. Miriam has taught drama in various capacities and lectured on eighteenth-century drama and visual art. She is most excited to be part of the PALATINE team and hopes her combined passion for teaching and the performing arts will contribute to opening up new avenues for learning and teaching in higher education.
Miriam’s interests include the long eighteenth century (with specific reference to English Opera), the music of Henry Purcell, film-making, theatre in education, puppetry, stand-up comedy, site-specific theatre, choral singing and animation. She also works as a freelance Dutch translator.
