Biography
Michael Huxley (Mike) gained his MA at the University of Leeds, where he began his research. At this time he performed himself. He began teaching dance history in the 1980s and has in his time been a member of the New Dance editorial collective, an Executive Member of ADMA, the Black Dance Development Trust, New Midlands Dance and Chair of EMA Dance Panel. He helped establish Dance 4 in 1990. He has been published in eight books including, with Noel Witts, The Twentieth Century Performance Reader. He has written for various dance periodicals. His published research has been about early European modern dance, British new dance and dance history. He is currently researching notions of the dancer as artist in the 1930s and, with Martin Leach, learning through critical observation of use in performance. He is a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique (PAAT). He is Chair Elect of the Editorial Board of CORD who publish Dance Research Journal. At De Montfort University, where he is based currently, he is part of the Centre for Excellence in Performance Arts. He teaches dance history, dance for camera and dance research for BA and MA Dance students
Mike has worked with PALATINE since it was established. From 2001 to 2006 he was a co-director. He is currently Senior Academic Advisor for Dance. In this capacity he advises on matters concerning learning and teaching in dance. He is involved in PALATINE’s many dance projects including conferences, workshops and research. This involves liaison with colleagues and with those in SCODHE in particular. He is on the Steering Group for the CETL for Leadership and Professional Learning at Liverpool John Moore’s University. Most recently he has been representing PALATINE in advising the DCMS Dance Forum about aspects of Dance in Higher Education.
