PRISM Project

In the teaching and learning of the performing and creative arts, and in the context of increasing cross- and interdisciplinary work, there is a growing demand for contextualisation i.e. placing the practices and discourses of the arts disciplines within a wider cultural context.

As part of the JISC/Higher Education Academy Distributed e-Learning programme, which focuses on the cultural issues and subject differences surrounding embedding e-learning technologies, PALATINE has been working on the PRISM project.

PALATINE subsequently obtained further funding to undertake a case study based on PRISM for the Accessible e-learning in Higher Education report published by JISC

PRISM is an interdisciplinary learning website that allows lecturers and students to view and assemble collections of exemplar works from the subject areas of dance, music, theatre, art, architecture & design, and film in some of the influential art movements of the ‘modern’ period in Europe and the United States. Works, productions and artefacts are grouped by movement (or ‘ism’).

PRISM will create a searchable and customisable user interface, which will provide lecturers and students with links to rights-cleared reproductions of and excerpts from exemplar works, productions and artefacts, grouped by movement (or ‘ism’).

The website will include a dedicated, password protected area (working title 'My Course Resource') allowing users to assemble and save thumbnails of and extracts from the works and pieces along with their own written material. It will also be possible to make saved combinations available to other users and publish new course material on the website.

Example:

A lecturer preparing a course on minimalism may find a reproduction of Eva Hesse's Addendum (Art) alongside an image from Paul Taylor's Duet (Dance) as well as an excerpt from Terry Riley's In C (Music). The lecturer will be able to download these resources and create his/her own course materials with the 'My Course Resource'. In much the same fashion, students can explore art movements across various disciplines by creating their own combinations and using PRISM to upload course work

Exemplars are contributed by subject specialists. Each is accompanied by a rationale that includes examples of how the work might be used in learning and teaching across the creative and performing arts. In the collections area, it is possible for users to assemble and save thumbnail images of and links to the works along with their own teaching materials. These combinations can be shared with user-selected groups or published as part of PRISM.
